Valentine’s Day is a special day of the year. And while many people have taken a turn in the other direction – deciding that it’s a no-good holiday – there is still a forever place in my heart for this day. Mainly because it’s a great holiday to teach children the importance and love and the different ways in which we can show our love to our family and friends.
5 years ago, my husband and I decided to do the 5 Love Languages tests for ourselves and we read the book together. It was honestly such a beautiful experience that connected us in a special way.
When I did the test, my number 1 love language was, surprise surprise, words of affirmation. Being the writer – and reader – I am, of course I appreciate words of appreciation directly at me. Am I right?
However, when I was trying to think of a book to write for one of my nieces, the appreciation they have for me when I do their hair came to mind. Every single time I see them, I have to do their hair. It’s a given. I know that it is a must for me to do every time I see them. And I love it. Because I know they love it. And they’re always so excited and appreciative of the cool hairstyles I do for them. And so, I wrote a book with a similar concept.

Laura the llama starts her day extremely grumpy and it only gets worse when she realizes she FORGOT that it’s Valentine’s Day! So she retreated to the pond by herself to reflect and relax, and the idea came to her like a blessing from above. She ran to the barn and got ready. And then she offered everyone on the farm free hairstyles!
What a fabulous book to share with your child about the love language: acts of service. Laura had to think of how best she could show her friends and family how much she loves them on the national day of love, and the fact that she thought of hairstyles is a lovely depiction that you don’t always have to give someone something – like chocolates or a card – but rather do something for them. What a lovely way to show a different approach to the holiday of love.
If you think this may be a book you’d like to read with your children this Valentine’s Day, you can order it here. 🙂
