Sometimes God uses the simplest childhood stories to teach us the deepest spiritual truths. And believe it or not, the story of the Three Little Pigs paints a pretty clear picture of what it looks like to build — or not build — a strong foundation on Him.
Everyone knows the story of the three little pigs.
Pig #1 was lazy and quickly threw together a house of straw.
Pig #2 was kind of lazy, piecing together a house of sticks.
Pig #3? He wasn’t lazy at all. He worked diligently, hour after hour, until he had built himself a house of brick—solid, sturdy, and unshakable.
And then the wolf showed up.
He huffed and puffed and easily blew down Pig #1’s flimsy straw house.
Then he moved to Pig #2’s stick house and huffing and puffing, he blew down his stick house.
But then, he turned to Pig #3 and when he tried the same tricks, something changed… He could not blow down that brick house—not for lack of trying, not for lack of malice, but simply because it was built to be unbreakable.
And this is where the story gets real for us.
Straw, Sticks, or Bricks: What’s Your Faith Built On?
Here’s the honest question you have to ask: Out of the three little pigs, which pig are you?
- Are you Piggy #1—lazy, barely reading the Bible, taking in a verse here or there, claiming belief in God but not actually building a relationship with Him?
- Are you Piggy #2—semi-lazy, reading your Bible a few times a week… or a month… or honestly maybe only when life falls apart – only running to God and “building” your relationship with Him when you need something?
- Or are you Piggy #3—persistent and intentional, rooted in daily Scripture reading, prayer, worship, and obedience – building and creating an unwavering relationship with the Lord where no devil can break through?
Because here’s the truth:
If you’re Piggy #1, Satan will knock you down fast.
If you’re Piggy #2, Satan will still knock you down—maybe it takes a second longer, but you’ll still crumble.
But if you’re Piggy #3—if you’re building day by day a solid, brick-by-brick foundation in Christ—then Satan can huff, puff, scheme, attack, and whisper, but he will not be able to blow you over; he will not be able to make you doubt, cower or run in fear.
Brick-by-Brick Faith
A strong foundation isn’t built in a day—it’s built daily. It’s built in the quiet moments of opening your Bible even when you don’t feel like it, whispering a prayer even when you’re tired, worshiping even when you’re discouraged, and choosing obedience even when it costs you something. These moments, when followed through daily, form your life’s foundation brick-by-brick.
So the next time you feel like you’re under attack—when life feels shaky, when fear is loud, when temptation whispers, when discouragement hits—you need to pause and ask yourself honestly:
“Which pig am I acting like right now—1, 2, or 3?”
Build your life with bricks; build your life on the firm foundation of Jesus, being persistent and intentional in your relationship with the Lord. So when the wolf (Satan) comes huffing and puffing — he won’t be able to break down your walls.
Because he WILL come for you; he always does. He tries his hardest to get every one of God’s creation to go down to the pits of hell with him. But there’s nothing to worry about when you build your foundation of faith on the Lord who has already won the war against Satan and hell. For you are God’s chosen people; He can’t wait to see you in eternity with Him. But guess what? He also LOVES to be with you here and now. And if you can’t spend a moment of every day with Him, what makes you think you’ll want to spend EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY with Him?
Strength for the Storms
Not only is a firm foundation on Jesus good for defending our lives against Satan, but it’s also good for enduring the storms of life; the testing of our faith; the doubt and sin that tries to break in.
For Jesus said,
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
— Matthew 7:24-27
Notice how Jesus doesn’t say if the storms come — He says when. Storms are inevitable but collapse is optional… Thus, PUT JESUS’ WORDS INTO PRACTICE so that your house will not be shaken when the storms come. Lay your foundation with bricks – with Jesus – by reading daily; praying daily; worshipping daily; and obeying God daily.
By following Jesus’ preaching, you’ll be just like piggy #3 – with a solid, sturdy foundation where no wolf or devil can knock down; nor any storm can wither or break.
Amen?
If you enjoyed this blog and are looking for more ways to strengthen your foundation in Christ Jesus, then check out my book Renew Your Mind. It’s based on Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the ways of the world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” It has 12 chapters that discuss the most common ways we can either follow the ways of the world (essentially ending up like Piggy #1 with an easy to break foundation) and how we can help our minds to be renewed in Christ Jesus (and end up like Piggy #3 with a solid foundation).
