We speak in poetry so as to please our souls this side of Heaven.

- A. C. McGuire

We fail to see

The extra in the ordinary

We blind ourselves

To what is necessary.

The Bible tells us to pray

Yet we falter every day

We follow the world’s way

Not listening to the Lord say,

“I am the only One

That can bring you peace.

I am the only One

That can help you release

The pain you carry

And the bitterness you hold.

Trust in Me

And you’ll feel as precious as gold.”

The symptoms of this world

Are pain, suffering and misery

But if only people knew You

All of that would be history.

They lack faith in You, Lord;

The world doesn’t want them to know

That their world doesn’t need to be heartache and pain;

Their lives could be full of growth.

The symptoms of this war-torn world

Make it hard for the truth to be trusted

But what a miracle it is

When Jesus saves and satan is busted.

The walls of my heart crumbled like sand

When I found out all the works of Your hands.

My shame, guilt and pain came bubbling to the surface

But Your love, grace and mercy nobody could surpass.

The world tries to get to me;

Satan tries to win

But then I remember

You bore all my sins.

Lord Jesus, You deserve all of the glory

For changing the direction of my life story.

Whenever I’m feeling blue

I like to look towards You

I seek You in the darkest nights

That’s where my faith reaches new heights

I declare glory upon Your name

As You take away all of my shame

My heart calls You, O God of Bethlehem

As I praise You for the blood of the Lamb.

I weep

As I imagine You on the cross

O how we don’t deserve Your grace

O how we don’t deserve Your love

O how we don’t deserve Your mercy.

We have ALL fallen short of Your grace

We ALL should fear the sight of Your face

May our sorrow derive from the Heavenly realm

That we may repent and reach salvation

For if we fear You not and feel nothing for Your death

We will never know the light of life.

I weep

As I am filled with guilt and shame

For my sin is what put You on that cross.

I grieve

But am quickly overcome with gratitude

For You are alive and well

My soul longs to be with You

My soul aches for Your great return

My soul loves You wholeheartedly.

The devil is a master manipulator

Jesus calls Him the “father of lies”

He twists and turns your mind so much

And laughs when he hears your cries.

That’s why we’re told to stand firm

That’s why we must build our foundation of Rock

That’s why we shall fasten our minds on the Lord

That’s why we must guard our hearts under key and lock.

Do not let your emotions govern your life

Do not let the devil scheme up his plans

Do not be of the kinds of people

Who build their house not on rock, but on sands.

Declare Jesus as Lord over your life

Shout gratitude in every direction

Through every trial, triumph and temptation

Let it waver not, who is your protection.

In those days it feels we’ve lost;

The devil has snuck his way in

We must see our faults as they are

We must realize all of our sin;

See the lack of focus we’ve held

Look at the faith we’ve lost

Accept and repent in Jesus’ name

And your Lord will show the devil who is boss.

About Poems & Prayers

Poems & Prayers is a collection of the raw, unfiltered poems I wrote during my first three years of becoming a Christian. Three years that felt like both a battlefield and a honeymoon with the Lord…

When Jesus first pulled me out of the darkness, I was baffled at how free I felt… The pit in my stomach disappeared, the weight on my shoulders dissipated, and the chains that bound me to anxiety, depression and despair were instantly broken. My foggy mind was cleansed, my broken heart was whole again, and all I wanted to do was praise God for it all.

And the best way I knew how, was to take my passion of writing and share the goodness of God’s grace and mercy over my life.

Poems & Prayers is my testimony of beginnings — of learning about Jesus, understanding grace, learning prayer, and understanding God’s love. It’s a book for anyone who has ever stepped into faith with shaking legs but a hopeful heart, trusting that God would carry what they couldn’t.

Some of the poems are simple. Some are messy. Some look like praise and some look like desperation — but all of them trace the same truth: God is good, God is powerful, God loves you no matter what.
