Christian Women Struggle With Depression, Despair, or Self-Pity, Too

Rainfalls of Restoration

Her petals wilt to the ground

Parched by faithlessness

As she slowly becomes devoured

By the ways of the wasteland around her.

She thirsts for the living water;

for rainfalls of restoration.

And with godly sorrow she prays

As her soul aches for tears to flow.

But she is parched

From the disease of hopelessness

As she becomes consumed

By the world around her…

And just as her vision was going dark,

A little light pierced through;

The light of the Lord has come

To mend her rotten roots brand new.

“I have heard your prayer,”

She heard the Lord say,

“I have come to restore

not only your wilted petals

but your aching soul, too.

I know it is rough

living in this wasteland all alone.

But I have crowned you with honour

For the works of My splendour.”

And with that the Lord was gone,

Leaving a rainfall in His place.

The rain drenched her wilted petals;

Quenching her parched soul.

He restored her back to new

So she could bloom and blossom with love

Spreading His grace and mercy and joy

To the lost flowers in the wasteland.

Inspired Scriptures:

“See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.”
“…They are the shoot I have planted, the work of my hands, for the display of my splendour.”

It doesn’t happen this fast. Though I wish it did.

This poem is from my latest book ‘She’s A Flower In A Wasteland’ and if you ever so feel inclined to read it one day, you’ll see that there are MANY poems in which I cry out my own despair within the view of flowers…

It’s a book of psalms from the depths of my withering, sorrow-filled, despairing heart and soul. Though I felt/feel trapped in hopelessness, I always tried to end each poem with the hope that is in Jesus Christ, because there really is hope — and HE IS IT. There is no other hope.

Despair. Self-pity. Depression. Down In The Dumps Of The Wasteland.

Even with the sun shining; even with all the lights on in the house; you are still consumed by the darkness. Because this type of darkness invades the soul, the heart, the mind. This type of darkness leaves you with not even a window to climb out of. It has buried you 6 feet under ground.

And so you wallow in despair and self-pity and depression.

I know this type of darkness all too well. It disappeared the moment I was saved (the day I felt the Holy Spirit enter me) and it was gone for 4 wonderful years. And then grief brought it back in full force. And thus was born the book the above poem is from.

Many things in life can bring one to the darkness of despair and depression. Grief is one. Shame is another. Sometimes it’s just from allowing yourself to be devoured by the ways of the world; allowing the evil of sin and death to consume you; allowing your guard (and armour of God) down so that the devil can slither in and weave lies and fear into your heart and mind and soul…

Whatever the case may be… You can and will be parched by faithlessness because you have allowed the darkness to cloud around you.

And now you wallow in self-pity. Because how could you have let this happen? How could you have turned away from God? You don’t deserve God’s grace. You aren’t good enough to be a Christian. You are a waste of space. So just let yourself wither away in the wasteland.

THE ONLY WAY OUT of this self-pity and despair and depression is Jesus Christ. He is the ONLY light that can break through the darkness that has invaded your soul.

And though it may not happen as fast as in the poem above, it very well COULD happen that fast. Just let His light pierce through and bring you a rainfall of restoration to your soul.

A Hope. A Dream. A Yearning. All For Jesus Christ.

We hope, we dream, we yearn for a perfect world, where sin and death no longer reign. We hope, we dream, we yearn for a day our depression will fade away.

Some will reach that day here on earth… And some may not get that relief until they reach Heaven. Either way, there is still hope and His name is Jesus; Lord; Saviour; Friend.

There is a reason there are many verses in the Bible that mention “enduring patiently” and “waiting patiently” and “remaining steadfast.” All of which are meant to be done in the honour and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. Meaning: that even in our depression, we seek the Lord, we call out to the Lord for His help, we never turn from His great mercy that is for some reason keeping us where we are.

Even in depression, GET ANGRY AT GOD. Tell Him your frustrations and sorrows and doubts. Tell Him your pain and angst and fear. Tell Him because HE ALREADY KNOWS. You aren’t keeping any secrets from Him.

So even in your depression, be like Job, who lost everything and did not curse God. Job shed his tears, he lamented — crying out to God. But through it all, he knew God reigned in the Highest place and deserved all the glory and honour. Job knew God had a plan, and if the plan was to destroy Job, then so be it.

But the plan wasn’t to destroy Job. God blessed him ten-fold what he had before.

The lesson here is that no matter what we are going through, God has a plan. And that plan is never to destroy us. It’s to make us stronger; to teach us to endure tribulation; to sometimes even test how strong our faith is in Him.

So BE LIKE JOB and endure, remain steadfast, and wait patiently in faith that God can and will do incredible things.

Move with hope; with a dream; with a yearning to be with the Lord Jesus Christ for all of Eternity in Heaven — in the Garden of Eden.

Depression will only last for this lifetime. But LOVE and LIGHT and JOY will prevail in the Heavens for ETERNITY. Don’t miss it.
