I looked at my husband one day and said, “I’m sorry, but if anyone asked me to denounce Jesus or they would kill you, I would choose Jesus. I love you, but I love Jesus more.” He looked at me and smiled. “I would do the same thing,” he said back to me, “I’m so happy I found you.”

Your partner is your better half. They mean more to you than words can describe; you can’t imagine your life without them; you never want to be away from them. You love them with every ounce of your being and you would sacrifice anything for them.
But, your love for your partner can become dangerous should you not have a strong hold on your love for Christ. When you keep Christ as number one above ALL other things — including your partners — there will never be a problem in obeying the Word of the Lord.
However, if you slip, and you begin to find solace and comfort and peace in your partner’s love or presence more so than resting in the Father’s love and presence, you become subjected to the possibility of worshipping your partner.
My mother used to always say, “You can have people in your world, just don’t make them your world.” This lesson popped into my head as I began writing this, for I was reminded that so many people fall into the wickedness of worshipping and idolizing anyone or anything other than God, our Father in Heaven.
When I look to my husband to fill the void within my heart;
When I seek peace within his presence;
When I think of his love as more important than Christ’s…
I know I must rest in the Lord.
A. C. McGuire, Rest In The Lord
When I try to find my spiritual comfort in my husband and not God, it creates an invisible separation between us. When I begin worshipping my husband above God, I must realize that it is not my husband’s job to fill the empty place in my heart that can only be filled by Christ.
“When I learn to love God better than my earthly dearest, I’ll love my earthly dearest better than I do now.”
C.S. Lewis
BUT WHY?
Why do we would worship man of the dust over the God of the Universe? God created all things… Why wouldn’t we worship, praise and thank Him for creating our partner, rather than worshipping our partner?
I guess the answer to this is the classic answer of why humans do anything.
The sinful nature of our hearts, ever since the first sin and the fall of man in the Garden of Eden.
Even Adam seemed to have chosen his wife over the Lord; he chose to follow what his wife said to do even though God told him NO.
So, you’re not alone. Even the first man God created ended up turning his back on Him. I guess our desire for MORE and our susceptible minds to the devil are too much, even when we’re offered all the good things in life.
A COMMON MISINTERPRETATION OF SUBMISSION
God calls women to submit to their husbands. He calls them to submit to their husbands, whom submit themselves to Christ. If that man is not submitting himself to Christ, but instead the devil, do you think this same command applies? If a woman’s husband is beating her, do you think the Lord is commanding her to submit to his beatings? I think not. Therefore, if a woman’s husband is not submitting to Christ, he is inevitably submitting to Satan. Thus, if a woman is putting the command of submitting to her husband above submitting to Christ, they are creating a false idol out of their husband.
A COMMON MISINTERPRETATION OF “LOVING THY WIFE”
God calls men to love their wives as Christ loves the church. If that man is doing things out of love for his wife that are not in step with the word of God, then that man is creating a false idol of his wife. For he is called to submit to Christ and love Christ first before anything or anybody. If he loves his wife more than the words of God, then he is not acting as a man of God, but instead bowing down to the false idol he created of his wife.
WORSHIP GOD ONLY
“YOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME.”
Exodus 20:3
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that s in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…”
Exodus 20:4-5
The Lord knows that we have curious little hearts that will never be satisfied except with Him, alone. That is why He gave us these commandments.
He calls us to worship Him only because He is the Almighty God; He is the Creator of everything we see and know and everything we can’t see and don’t know. He is the most powerful entity in the whole universe. He calls us to worship Him only because He is the only One that can fill the empty spot in our soul. He is our missing piece; without Him we will always feel a certain kind of emptiness. But with Him, we are filled with a sort of Heaven on earth.
BE LIKE MARY
Could you imagine being a virgin and somehow being pregnant?
Could you imagine being the soon-to-be-husband of this woman who just “magically” became pregnant?
You would have your doubts. As you maybe should…
You would feel angry, confused, betrayed.
Back then, abortion wasn’t an option, so Joseph — Mary’s husband — planned to quietly divorce her and have her go on her way with her child whom was not his… Luckily, an angel of the Lord told him that it was a child from the Holy Spirit and not to worry. The fear of the Lord that Joseph held allowed Him to accept this to be true and that’s the end of that.
(Matthew 1:18-25)
But I could only imagine today… When abortion is so easily attainable… Would you ask your wife to have an abortion? Would you believe that this child was from the Lord? Or would you accuse her of cheating? Would you stand by her side through it all?
Had Joseph asked Mary to have an abortion, she never would have. Her faith in the Lord was higher than anything. She believed every Word that comes from Him and believed she held the Saviour in her womb. Although she must have been filled with fear, her faith was stronger, and her submission to the Lord was what mattered most. His ways are higher than ours. And she knew that to be true.
So, be like Mary. Submit to the LORD before anybody else.
